Middle School
The Middle School hallways are alive with the energy and enthusiasm that our students bring with them each day!
The Middle School years are a time of exploration, promise, challenge and opportunity, and Chapin's program is designed to promote this exploration, nurture the promise, support the challenges and seize the opportunities. The Middle School provides a safe and supportive environment that allows girls in grades 4 through 7 to explore, experiment and engage with their world.
The academic program in the Middle School is designed to help young girls develop the skills, habits and discipline of strong students. In all classes, primary emphasis is placed on the process of learning and on the development of essential skills. The fourth and fifth grade programs are designed to allow for a gradual transition from the self-contained lower school environment to a departmentalized upper school. This includes an interdisciplinary humanities program that focuses on developing reading, writing and study skills, and a homeroom program that provides students with both support and structure.
As the girls move up to the sixth and seventh grades, they remain active both inside and outside the classroom: through school trips to Cape Cod and Boston, LIP (Laptop Immersion Program), arts, athletics and service opportunities, to name just a few. Regardless of the grade or discipline, Middle School teachers understand the developmental needs of students of this age, and design their classrooms in ways that support and inspire them.
Recognizing the importance of relationships in the lives of girls, the Advisory program is a central component of the Middle School experience. Advisors meet regularly with their advisees in small group settings, providing a safe environment to teach appropriate life skills. Advisors also develop important partnerships with parents as they work to ensure the success of every child. Grade-level teams of teachers and advisors oversee the academic, social and emotional growth of the girls during this critical time in their development. Students leave Middle School equipped with the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in Upper School, and with the desire and commitment to become active members of the larger community.
